“Your donation does not only mean great support to the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (NATO MILMED COE), but it is a valuable contribution to military medicine as well. We highly appreciate it” – highlighted Col. Dr. István Kopcsó, Director of the NATO MILMED COE, during the handover ceremony of the medical equipment donated to the Centre.

On Wednesday, March 28 two well-known companies donated state-of-the-art medical equipment to the Budapest-based NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine for the purposes of education and emergency medical care.

One company donated airway management equipment such as endoscopes, laryngoscopes and intubation manikins as well as a mobile telemedicine set that may be used under field conditions to hold video-teleconferences. The other company donated two pocket ultrasound devices to assist the mastering of the methods of diagnostic imaging analysis. The participants of further training programs will be introduced to the new pieces of equipment during the courses organized by the MILMED COE.

Col. (Med.) Dr. István Kopcsó, the director of the NATO MILMED COE took over the donation from David Pickles, the representative of one of the companies who arrived from Great Britain, and presented him with the ceremonial shield of the Centre in return.

“We are very pleased to receive this generous donation because we strongly believe in the value of the work of our institution, and because these pieces of equipment will help our students to learn the methods of state-of-the-art emergency care and life saving, and to gain experience during practice in simulated situations", Col. (Med.) Kopcsó told us.

Some recent events also reflect the significance of the donation. The First Responder Trainer (FRT) Training was successfully completed last week, and the students of that course were able to use state-of-the-art simulation equipment to broaden their technical skills. On March 26 the MILMED COE, which was accredited internationally three years ago, launched the Emergency Management of Battlefield Injuries (EMBI) course within its professional program whose aim is to help attain the goals of the Alliance in the field of military medicine and the transformation of the NATO health care system. The keynote speaker at the course opening was Brig.-Gen Rob van der Meer, Surgeon General, Netherlands Armed Forces and COMEDS Chairman, who delivered his speech in light of NATO’s new Strategic Concept.
