Every Competition is a Celebration

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the continental championship in Győr on 19 February, Dr. Gábor Földváry, Deputy State Secretary for Legal Affairs and Administration at the Ministry of Defence emphasized that choosing Hungary after two years again as the venue of the ESC European Championship Rifle/Pistol/Running Target 10m is a huge success of sports diplomacy.

The opening remarks by Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén were read out at the ceremony, in which the politician pointed out that shooting sports have a great tradition in Hungary, as attested by our results achieved in the recent period. In his welcome speech, Dr. Gábor Földváry said that Minister of Defence Dr. István Simicskó is not only the main patron of the event but has also followed the preparations with attention all along. “As an active sportsman, the minister is a supporter of all sports done in the best traditions of men’s primordial will to fight and the defence of the community and homeland. Every competition is a celebration, and so is this European championship. It gives us special pleasure to see that close to 700 competitors from 48 countries are participating in this contest", the deputy state secretary said.

President of the European Shooting Confederation Vladimir Lisin thanked the organizers and Hungary for hosting this prestigious competition after 2016 again, which sets a new record in terms of the number of participating nations and competitors.

Mayor of Győr Zsolt Borkai said that organizing such another prestigious competition after two years at a higher level than the first one is a great challenge, but, as he noted, the government and the town have done a lot in the recent period to make sure that they can receive the shooters in such conditions.

The contributors of the opening ceremony included the soldiers of the HDF 12th Arrabona Surface-to-Air Missile Regiment, who not only placed the flags of participating nations in a worthy manner, but also raised, with military honors, the flags of Hungary, the municipality of Győr and the European Shooting Confederation. They will be doing service during the whole duration of the one-week competition, among others at the announcement of results.

The artists of the National Theatre of Győr also appeared during the opening ceremony of the ESC 2018 European Championship 10m.
