Maj.-Gen. Volker R. Halbauer, the commander of KFOR recently visited Podujevo Municipality, in the area of responsibility of the Hungarian Liaison and Monitoring Team (LMT). The general was joined on his visit by Col. Mikael Christoffersson, the commander of the Joint Regional Detachment-Centre (JRD-C).

At the start of the visit, the COM KFOR was introduced to the process of water purification at the water treatment plant of Sajkovac. The water processed at the plant comes from Lake Batlava, Kosovo’s third largest body of stagnant water, and after the treatment, the drinking water is distributed to Podujevo Municipality and most of Pristina through two water supply lines.

Due to the ebbing water level of the lake, water restrictions were introduced in recent weeks, and there are some villages where drinking water is available only four hours a day.

Maj.-Gen. Halbauer met the leaders of the municipality, including Mayor Agim Veliu, Police Chief Isak Ejupi and Beqim Yashari, the president of the Islamic Council, who thanked KFOR and the LMT for their work, and expressed hope that the good relationship would be maintained in the future.

The COM KFOR thanked Maj. Miklós Király, the leader of the Hungarian LMT for having organized the meetings. As he said, maintaining contact with the leaders of the municipality is a priority for the LMT, since the good relationship with them helps the instant reporting of events in the municipality to KFOR. At the end of the visit, Maj.-Gen. Halbauer expressed his satisfaction with the excellent job done by the LMT.
