Nominated advisors from the first rotation of the HDF Military Advisory Team (MAT) participated in a Police Advisory Training (PAT) in mid-April in St. Astier, France.

Following their deployment to Afghanistan, the MAT personnel will put into practice what they
have learnt on the course held at the base (CENFG) of the French military police (Gendarmerie). The
personnel in the ISAF area of operations will have the mission of providing advice to the command
groups of the brigades of the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) and the Afghan Border
Police (ABP).

After the opening ceremony, during the first few days the soldiers – who are mainly drawn from
the HDF 5th ‘Bocskai István’ Infantry Brigade and the Ohio National Guard – were given general
presentations by Norwegian and Italian specialists about the work of the Police Operational Mentoring
and Liaison Teams (POMLTs) which had earlier served in Kunduz, Heart and Faryab. They learnt
how to work with interpreters, and had a meeting with the representatives of the role-playing teams
arriving from Afghanistan.

The next few days were devoted to professional trade training, which included Inside Threat Warning
(ITW) and Counter-Insurgency (COIN). The trainees were introduced to Lessons Learned/Lessons
Identified (LL/LI), After Action Review (AAR), the police system of Afghanistan, and mastered the
police Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs). In the afternoons, their instructors tasked them to
work out and resolve some practical situations in syndicates.

The training audience participated in field training sessions and attended the CENFG training facility
to learn the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the Police Advisor Teams (PATs) and perform
the tasks of coordinating planning and cooperation. By learning the well-prepared and detailed content
of the course curriculum, the personnel have successfully prepared themselves for carrying out their
advisory duties in full to assist the activity of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).
