Afghanistan is a landlocked and mountainous country in Central Asia stricken with poverty and chronic instability. The newly released film of the Zrínyi Média Military Film Studio introduces the activities of the Hungarian Defence Forces’ ISAF contingent that is deployed at several bases in the northern region of the country, among others being tasked with contributing to development projects and mentoring the Afghan National Army.

In December 2001, after the Taliban government was toppled and the new Afghan government was formed, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was established by the UN Security Council to assist the administration of the country and provide basic security to the Afghan people. NATO assumed control of ISAF in 2003 and the rebuilding of Afghanistan began.

The Hungarian Defence Forces deploy their largest contingent within ISAF in Afghanistan. Hungarian troops run a Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) in Pol-e Khomri to help with the reconstruction efforts. In addition, cooperating with our US partners, the HDF Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team and the HDF Air Mentor Team train the personnel of the Afghan National Army so that NATO can transfer security responsibility to the Afghan national security forces in the short term.
