The HDF Pápa Air Base is a special place where airmen and civil employees of 12 nations as well as four organizations work together. Thanks to the multinational culture, there are many events and celebrations in the life of the community working here that are less known in Hungary. This time, the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Run brightened up their busy everyday life.

Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick was a Christian missionary born in Wales, who preached in the area of Ireland and used the shamrock to visually illustrate the concept of the Trinity. The anniversary of his death is an Irish national day observed on 17 March every year. This celebration began to spread all over the world in the early 90s. Today, St. Patrick’s Day means that different cultures and nationalities have fun collectively and hold festivals in a truly carefree and joyous mood.

In the spirit of this good mood and charity, a team of volunteers organized the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Run at the HDF Pápa Air Base on the last Friday of March. The approximately 60 participants of the afternoon programme covered the two-kilometer distance running or walking, most of them wearing funny green clothes in honor of the feast day. Prizes were given to the fastest runner, the best costume and the nation represented in the largest numbers. The event was also an occasion to collect donations, and the fund raised will go to an institute for helping disadvantaged young people in Pápa.

The organizers and the participants were all very satisfied with the event. The large turnout, the donations made and the good mood are proof of the exemplary cooperation – at work, in charity or while having fun – among people of different cultures and nationalities on the HDF Pápa Air Base.
