Fighters Caught on Cameras

The staff of Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania surprised the representatives of international media with a special program on Friday, November 6. The visitors had opportunity to take part in an aerial photo session at the air base hosting the 39th Hungarian rotation of the Baltic Air Policing mission.

The rotation is halfway through with Hungary’s first air policing mission in the Baltic region. “I thought it would be a little more difficult, but thanks to the teamwork, we can handle everything very successfully, so these two months so far have been a good opportunity to learn lessons and I’m happy about it", Lt.-Col. Tamás Fekete, the commander of the Hungarian contingent told us.

He added that they fly much less live sorties than earlier rotations, yet the 90-plus-strong Hungarian detachment has busy days. Besides real-life alerts (Alpha scrambles), they have flown countless training missions (Tango scrambles). During the latter, they often flew together with their German colleagues stationed at Ämari Air Base, Estonia.

The team of journalists had opportunity to witness this cooperation while flying aboard a C-27J Spartan transport plane to take photos of a joint practice intercept (PI) conducted by JAS-39 Gripens and German Eurofighter Typhoons. The fighters were tasked with intercepting the aircraft transporting the journalists, which was flying at an altitude of 1300 meters…
