A Hungarian proved to be the best out of more than 400 entrants: Capt. András Avar has won the 15.8 kilometre race organized by the US 38th Cavalry Regiment in Kosovo. The US regiment currently deployed in Kosovo organized the Cavalry Charge “Ruck and Run” for troops serving with KFOR, to commemorate the feats of the unit in World War II.

The competitors wore boots and carried a 10kg rucksack while covering the first 7.9 km sector of the course set in the hilly area of Camp Bondsteel. During the second sector of equal length, they were running to negotiate the steep upward and downward slopes. The Hungarian KFOR contingent was represented with 34 soldiers, so they started the nearly 16km-long “charge" as one of the largest competing teams.

The Hungarian troops serving in Kosovo are in excellent physical condition, but due to their complex duties, only some of them were able to take up this challenge. Following the national tricolours, the Hungarian team started the race at a rapid pace. Of them, and of all competitors, Capt. András Avar was the fastest to finish it, under 1 hour and 10 minutes.
