The 16th Regional Festival of Military Bands made a big hit in Szolnok, on Friday, September 2, as the bands making their appearances on the venue played both classical and light music pieces besides the usual military music. The festival by now marks the traditional opening ceremony of the program series of the Day of Szolnok. Lieutenant General Zoltán Orosz, the Deputy Chief of the MoD Defence Staff greeted the military bands and the spectators, and the Vice Mayor of the Town István Szabó opened the event.

Three military bands entertained the audience in the main square of the town with field shows first, then by a joint concert. The program was organised by the MoD Office for Public Relations and Military Grave Care.

First the Hódmezővásárhely Garrison Band marched in into the square. The 25-member band made its debut in Ópusztaszer May, 2002. They have given guest-performances in Austria, Germany, Romania, and the Hungarian Radio has too prepared three times public audio-recordings with them. The bandmaster is Captain István Kovács.

The second appearing orchestra was the Army Band of Szentendre (ABS). The Band containing 26 soldiers, and formed in 2005, has already become an important actor of the cultural and artistic life of Szentendre and its neighbourhood these days. Last time they represented our Homeland in Albertville, France, in July, 2010 at the “World Meeting of Military Bands". Their conductor is Major Zoltán Dalmandi.

The third performers were the members of the Szolnok garrison band. The band directed by bandmaster Major Gyula Válóczi was established way back in 1969 at the Kilián György Aviation Engineering College with an aim to popularise the air force as a branch of service in our homeland. The band bears the name “Hungarian Air Force Band" from 2004 onward.

A joint concert was given after the field shows, and as the closing event of the program, Lieutenant General Imre Lamos, the Commander of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base and of the Szolnok Garrison handed over memorial certificates.
