On Saturday, July 16 a graduation ceremony was held at the Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University (ZMNE), where 285 students received their first, second or third diplomas. Many of them were awarded tokens of appreciation for their outstanding academic, scientific, and public achievements.

After the ceremonial reception of the university flag and the strains of the call signal and the national anthem, a welcome speech was delivered for the graduating military officer cadets wearing mess dresses and this years’ fourth group of graduating civilian students in gowns. Also in attendance were Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende, MoD State Secretary for Public Administration Lajos Fodor, Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, Chief, MoD Defence Staff and MoD Cabinet Chief Dr. Gábor Szarka.

Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende delivered a speech at the commencement, emphasizing the special characteristics of the ceremony and the common goal that always unites the ZMNE community: every graduating student embark upon their career and accomplish their mission, that is, the service of the Homeland, the cause of the Hungarian nation.

Csaba Hende underlined that we have left a difficult year behind, because the transformation of the university has started, with the primary aim of restoring values with their true meaning and making sure that none of these values are lost.

The Defence Minister emphasized that the prestige of public service career and that of the military career within that would definitely increase in the future with the introduction of the new public service and military career models as of January 2012.

The Minister stressed that the graduating students have (also) undertaken the commitment to perform their duties in their respective positions in these difficult times, in any field of service required by the security of the nation and the defense of the Homeland. Finally Dr. Csaba Hende asked the graduating students to remain loyal throughout their entire career to the ideas which have motivated them to choose their vocation.

After Dr. Csaba Hende’s festive speech, Lt.-Col. (Ret.) Zoltán Kertész read out the decrees on awarding degrees and awards, then the graduating students received their diplomas and tokens of appreciations. Lt-Col. (Eng.) József Mogyorósi – who has completed the ZMNE advanced-level leadership (general staff) course – was awarded the prestigious Primus inter pares (First among equals) Award.

At the reception following the event, Gen. Tibor Benkő congratulated the new graduates and the military officer cadets. In his toast the Chief of Defence stressed: “Be proud of your diplomas, for you have successfully met a major challenge. However, as commanders and leaders, do not forget that this also imposes on you several obligations in the service of the public, for example, you are responsible for troops and employees; and in your work, the nation and the Homeland should come first!"
