The Ones Who Support the Contingent – Reporting from Kosovo

As the saying goes, “there are no armed forces without logistics”. This is especially true in the environment of a mission. The soldiers serving with the sixth rotation of the HDF KFOR Contingent in Kosovo are well aware that the peacekeepers would not be able to perform their duties without the professionalism of the personnel serving with the support company.

The chain of command in the support company of the Hungarian peacekeeping unit serving in Pristina is not so simple to understand. The subunit is composed of two parts: 12 troops are cooperating with the Portuguese logisticians, being assigned to the first (‘Alpha’) company of the Portuguese–Hungarian KFOR Tactical Reserve Maneuver Battalion (KTM). The other part of the company is directly assigned to the Hungarian contingent.

“The core mission of the support company is to maintain the conditions for the operation of the Hungarian maneuver company of the KTM Battalion; to execute the day-to-day movement tasks of personnel and materiel, ensure the operability of the military equipment and the combat readiness of the contingent; to carry out catering and stockpiling duties; to assemble march columns and furnish the sites of various events and staff meetings", Capt. Zsolt Galgóczi, the commander of the support company is listing the tasks of the subunit.

The repair workshop of the contingent is assigned to the company too, where “the staff is on duty 24 hours per day". The members of the six-strong vehicle maintenance squad are working to keep the motor and combat vehicles fully mission capable all the time. They often have to fix three or four vehicles a day, as the roads in Kosovo can “soon wear down" the motor transport (MT). Fortunately, the mechanics of the workshop have as yet been able to successfully deal with all technical problems in a short time.

The Hungarian cook’s duty in the support company is less dirty but not any less easier. He is tasked with assisting the work of Portuguese military cooks and the local Albanian staff at the field kitchen of Camp Slim Lines. He is the one who the Hungarian soldiers “like the most" on the holidays because he prepares those real Hungarian dishes that are often eagerly awaited.

The CIS section is also assigned to the support company. The four soldiers on its staff are tasked with ensuring uninterrupted communications and data links inside and outside the camp.
