V4 Chiefs of Defence Meeting in Budapest

On 26–27 March, the Chiefs of Defence of the Visegrád countries arrived in Hungary for a two-day interim meeting at the invitation of Hungarian Chief of Defence General Dr. Tibor Benkő. Besides the meeting, the chiefs of defence attended the Distinguished Visitors’ Day of the Special Operations Forces (SOF) exercise Visegrad 4 Sight 2018, and visited the festival of V4 military bands held in Budapest. The aim of the meeting was to make preparations for the V4 Chiefs of Defence conference to be held in this June, which will at once mark the closing of the one-year Hungarian presidency.

Chief of Defence General Dr. Tibor Benkő received, with military honors, Czech Chief of Defence General Josef Bečvář, Polish Chief of Defence General Leszek Surawski and Slovak Chief of Defence General Milan Maxim at an interim meeting organized during the Hungarian presidency of the Visegrád Cooperation. The meeting was aimed at discussing current joint projects and reviewing the challenges of the security environment.

During the discussions, the sides reviewed the security situation of the Central European region, with special regard to security challenges arising from illegal migration, terrorism and attacks from cyberspace.

Based on the successful 2016 standby period of the V4 Battle Group declared to the European Union, during the meeting the sides reviewed the current status of the preparation for the establishment of the V4 EU BG which is due in 2019.

At plenary presentations, the V4 Chiefs of Defence reviewed and discussed the results achieved in the establishment of the V4 Joint Logistic Support Group HQ and the future tasks of the establishment of this organization.

At the end of the plenary session, the V4 Chiefs of Defence signed a joint communiqué which states that they stay committed to the V4 Cooperation, and regard the interim meeting and the joint exercise as especially important stages in this cooperation.

In connection with the SOF Exercise Visegrad 4 Sight 2018, the joint communiqué of the Chiefs of Defence states that “the V4 Chiefs of Defence attach high importance to those events during which the soldiers of member states can broaden their knowledge, exchange experience and increase their cooperation capabilities with soldiers of partner nations. They regard the SOF Exercise Visegrád 4 Sight 2018 conducted between 19 and 29 March in Szolnok as one such opportunity." Accordingly, the main objective of the exercise is to analyze and share the lessons learned by the nations in theatres of foreign missions through joint task execution during the exercise.

In the framework of the meeting, the Chiefs of Defence visited the festival of V4 military bands held outside St. Stephen’s Basilica, and assessed it as an important event in preserving cultural values and military traditions.
