Headed by Deputy Commandant Col. Dr. Csaba Horváth, a delegation from the MoD Institute and Museum of Military History (MoD IMMH) recently paid a visit to the Kassel headquarters of the German partner organization of the MoD IMMH Military Memorial and War Grave Care Directorate, the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge – VDK).

During the visit, the Hungarian delegation held a discussion with VDK Secretary General Daniela Schily on the program of the international war grave care conference to be organized in Budapest next autumn. In what followed, together with the professional leaders of the German War Graves Commission, they reviewed a number of current issues in bilateral cooperation. They discussed the ongoing Russian research program in the Uz valley which is being conducted with German–Hungarian–Romanian cooperation, the practice of secondary burials in Eastern Europe, and also the Hungarian–German military cemetery in Budaörs and the possibilities of joint centennial commemorations next year.

On its way home, the delegation made on-site surveys in eight military cemeteries (Bad Kissingen, Würzburg, Fürth, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Landshut, Pocking and Passau), as these cemeteries are the final resting places of close to 1000 Hungarian troops who fell in World War II. Besides documenting the Hungarian soldiers’ graves, the delegation placed the wreath of remembrance at each site as well.
