Afghan Women with Needles and Thread

Szöveg: HUN PRT-12 PAO |  2012. augusztus 18. 14:11

The women’s affairs representative in the CIMIC cell of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) is responsible for supporting and promoting the training of Afghan women, for example through job placement. In view of the local needs, the sewing course is the most popular one with the ladies.

For this reason, the HUN PRT distributed 100 sewing machines, 1,000 meters of cloth, needles and thread at many sites around Baghlan Province so women can learn the tricks of the trade in sewing and tailoring. Both adults and secondary schoolgirls participate in the courses. The articles of clothing they make include baby clothes and traditional men’s wear. The girls say tailoring is definitely the more difficult of the two activities, while sewing is already almost child’s play.

It is difficult for women in Afghanistan to find jobs and build careers. More and more girls study in secondary education, but their numbers are still negligible as compared to those unskilled or illiterate girls who marry early, run a household and raise their children. It is those widows without a male breadwinner in their families who have the hardest life, being destined to get along by themselves and earn a living to be able to feed their children day by day.
