Afghanistan – Extended Mandate

Szöveg: kormany.hu |  2011. április 2. 6:13

The government has extended the mandates of the contingents of the Hungarian Defence Forces deployed in Afghanistan. The HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team, the HDF Air Mentor Team and the HDF Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team continue their work in ISAF so that the Central Asian country can take over security as soon as possible.

In its resolution No. 1078/2011 (30/3), the government extended the mandate of the Hungarian Defence Forces Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) until 1 October, 2011. The Hungarian contingent stationed in Pol-e Khomri has been participating in reconstruction projects in Baghlan Province since 2006.
As regards the new commitments of the Hungarian Defence Forces, the government recently started focusing on training and mentoring tasks in line with NATO’s priorities. Our main objective is to train the Afghan National Army (ANA) which will enable the Afghan government to maintain security in the country on its own. With the decision of the Hungarian government, the mandate of the HDF Air Mentor Team (AMT), tasked with training the ANA Air Force (ANAAF), has been extended until 1 May, 2012.

The Cabinet has also extended the mandate of the HungarianUS Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) by another year, until 31 August, 2012.
In cooperation with the international community and the Afghan authorities, Hungary is working to create the conditions for security, administration and development in Baghlan Province, which will enable Afghan authorities themselves to carry out security duties in that region. In the first quarter of 2011, a total of 131,000 troops from 48 troop contributing nations were doing their tours of duty in the NATO-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
The President of the Republic of Hungary will also be advised of the decision, and a report will be submitted to the National Assembly.
The government’s policy on Afghanistan remains unchanged.
