Two final-year students of the Theresian Military Academy, Wiener Neustadt recently visited the Hajdúhadház and Hódmezővásárhely garrisons of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade for a month-long field exercise. Officer cadets Alexander Placzek and Philip Pierzl were introduced to the whole range of tasks involved in engineer support, and joined the training program for the sub-units of the brigade.

On the first week the two final-year cadets of the Theresian Military Academy of Wiener Neustadt joined the 2nd engineer company of the Operations Support Engineer Battalion to receive C-IED training. On the second week they attended a demolition training session and had tactical training with the Combat Support Engineer Company in Hajdúhadház, while on the third and fourth weeks they went to Hódmezővásárhely to train together with the 1st engineer company in the use of engineer equipment, countermobility operations, crossing and survivability support (i.e. fortification and concealment). During these training sessions they learnt about the items of engineer equipment in service with the engineer support units of the infantry brigade, their range of employment and the operator’s manuals as well as the method of laying mines of different types. The two cadets introduced the Operations Support Engineer Battalion HQ to the system of officer training in Austria.

On the last day of their visit the two final-year cadets thanked Battalion CO Lt.-Col. Ferenc Bátor for letting the officers and NCOs of the unit share with them the lessons learned in Hungary and in ISAF, Afghanistan, and for allowing them insight into the daily life and training programs of the battalion. They said the exchange of experience helps Austrian and Hungarian troops to know each other better.
