Chief of Defence Visits Missions in the Middle East

The Chief of the Defence Staff recently made a three-day tour to inform himself of the living and working conditions of the contingents serving in the Sinai Peninsula and Cyprus as well as the execution of the regional security-related tasks carried out by them.

Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the Defence Staff recently paid a three-day visit to the Hungarian contingents serving with the military missions in the Middle East.

The general started his tour on October 28 by visiting the camps and soldiers of the Hungarian contingent of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) deployed in the Sinai Peninsula and the Hungarian contingent of the HDF UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

The main goal of the visit paid by the Chief of Defence was to gain first-hand experience of the living and working conditions of the contingents and the execution of the tasks carried out by them in connection with the security of the region.

During the visit, besides the Hungarian soldiers, Gen. Tibor Benkő met with Dr. Péter Kveck, the Hungarian Ambassador to Egypt and held a discussion with MFO Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Warren J. Whiting. The topics of the discussion included the current issues in regional security and the scope of opportunities for the activity of the Hungarian contingent.

While on his visits, the Chief of the Defence Staff met the personnel of the Hungarian contingents at staff meetings held in the MFO North and South Camps as well as the UNFICYP HQ, Famagusta and in Camp St. Istvan, Athienou. He informed them about the most important current issues and then answered their questions.
