The institution was founded at Fort Bliss, Texas on July 1, 1972, and has been receiving international students since 1975. Over the last 39 years, 917 students from 76 foreign nations graduated from the Sergeants Major course. Hungary has so far been represented with 20 soldiers, and CWO István Kristóf took his degree in this institution in 2008.

The International Military Student Hall of Fame was established in 2009, with the aim of recognizing the achievements of students who, after graduation, have reached the highest level attainable for NCOs in the armed forces of their own nation or at some NATO command, and significantly contributed, through their work, to the development of the NCO corps and the system of NCO education.

CWO István Kriston has been serving since 2011 as Command Sergeant Major of the Hungarian Defence Forces. The induction ceremony was the recognition of his work done in the last three years. The Hungarian command sergeant major is the 22nd inductee in the International Military Student Hall of Fame at the US Army Sergeants Major Academy.
