The large-scale Exercise Allied Spirit VII – organized by the US 7th Army Training Command’s Joint Multinational Readiness Center (Hohenfels, Germany) – has recently ended. On the exercise, the Hungarian Defence Forces were represented by the 3rd Bercsényi Miklós Infantry Battalion of the HDF 5th Bocskai István Infantry Brigade and its module elements, with 69 personnel on strength.

During the close to four-week exercise, the Hungarian battalion executed tasks only in virtual space, but the enemy and friendly forces moving on the training ground also appeared in the simulation. On multiple occasions, the battalion was assigned an important role in executing tactical tasks. For example, it was on the basis of a successful counterattack by the Hungarian battalion that the Latvian-led Brigade HQ prepared the plans for the successful combat engagement of the subunits of a brigade composed of the troops of 12 nations.

The Hungarian battalion performed excellently on the exercise, as attested by two certificates of merit which were presented at the ENDEX by Lt.-Col. Hayes, the leader of a US observer controller trainer (OCT) team to 1st Lt. Dániel Kátai, head of the CIS cell; and by Latvian Brigade Commander Col. Ilmars-Atis Lejins to Capt. Zoltán Tóth Harangi, the head of the intelligence cell.

According to the US OCT team, the battalion received a “grade four" assessment on a five-grade scale. Lt.-Col. Hayes emphasized that only a few subunits have so far been able to perform at this outstanding level on the first occasion.
