Football Afternoon in the Camp

A special kind of football-match has been staged recently in Afghanistan, between the “selected” team drawn from the personnel of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) and one of the futsal (an indoor version of the association football) teams of the town of Pol-e Khumri. Everybody had a good time during the friendly football game.

The “PRT-selected" team, consisting mainly of Hungarian, Montenegrin and Croatian members, invited for the game the futsal team named ‘Azram’ of Pol-e Khumri – the players of which have been trained in the local Afghan Championship for a long time –, who accepted the invitation right away.

The organisation did not take long – thanks to the HUN PRT CIMIC/PSYOPS section. The Afghan team consisting of thirteen sportsmen arrived on the first day of December at the military camp.

After the pre-match warm-up Col. Dr. Romulusz Ruszin, the Commander of the HUN PRT greeted the teams and asked them to be sportsmanlike and play fairly. In the course of the twice 30 minutes of the match – played before a large audience and under impartial refereeing – there was a balanced game going on.

“The end score is not so important" – stressed Col. Ruszin after the match – “it is much more important that jointly we were able to spend half an hour with pursuing some sports." For authenticity’s sake, however, we must mention that the soldiers’ team won 12-8.

After the football match the players of the Azram FC received sports equipment from the PRT commander.
