Generals Appointed and Promoted

In the morning of August 19 – acting on Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende’s recommendation – Dr. Pál Schmitt, the President of the Republic of Hungary handed over documents on appointments and promotions to generals on the occasion of Hungary’s national holiday, in a ceremony held inside Sándor Palace at Buda Castle.

Also in attendance were Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende, Lajos Fodor, the MoD State
Secretary for Public Administration, Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, Chief of the MoD Defence Staff, Dr.
Gábor Szarka, MoD Cabinet Chief and Norbert Kiss, the Head of the Public Relations Bureau
of the Office of the President of the Republic of Hungary.

President of the Republic Dr. Pál Schmitt appointed Col. László Szabó, the Chief of the MoD
Defence Staff Training Directorate to brigadier-general as from July 15. The Head of State
promoted Maj.-Gen. József Kovács, the Commander of the HDF Joint Force Command to
lieutenant general and Maj.-Gen. (Eng.) (Ret.) Imre Rába to engineer lieutenant-general as from August 20. He
appointed Col. Dr. (Med.) László Schandl, the Director-General of the Military Hospital –
State Health Centre to medical brigadier-general; Col. István Kun-Szabó, the Commander
of the HDF Support Brigade to brigadier-general; and Col. László Szegő, the Head of the
National Defence Department of the Office of the President of the Republic of Hungary to
brigadier-general.
