The exercise provided the players with opportunities to practice the military decision-making process, battle command, and air-land interoperability in a multinational force.
Exercise Allied Spirit I consisted of two parts: the training phase was followed by a nine-day live “execution" phase, which involved 24-hour stand-by, continuous planning and of course, uninterrupted fighting of the battles.
The JTAC attached to the battalion was responsible for the integration of the air force into the maneuver plan and fire support system of land forces, which was of key importance. During his work he briefed Battalion Commander Lt.-Col. László Deme about the capabilities and limits of the air force, deconflicted the air assets and artillery pieces in the battalion’s area of responsibility and requested, coordinated and controlled the aircraft on Close Air Support (CAS) missions. During the execution, he called in air strikes to destroy 20 key targets, including an enemy battalion command post in a simulated environment, which helped the battalion to fight the battle successfully.
At the end of the exercise, in recognition of their exemplary professional standards, the US observer and after action review team nominated for the title “Heroes of Hohenfels" Capt. Levente Nagy, the best battle command officer of the exercise and 1st Lt. Gábor Herczeg, the most efficient JTAC of the exercise. The two also received certificates and memorial coins awarded by the commander of the base.
