Hungarian Victory in Ostrava

For the fourth time, the helicopter crews of the Hungarian Defence Forces participated in the competition “Simulator Hip Cup 2016”, organized in the Czech Republic with the participation of 14 teams from six nations. This year, the best ones were the nominated aircrew of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base, who won three of the four flight disciplines and also in the overall category.

For decades, it has been known for a fact that the use of simulators is essential in the state-of-the-art training of helicopter crews. It is not only a cost-effective means of practicing flight procedures, but also provides a safe opportunity for experiencing and handling such emergencies for which the crews could be trained only at very high risk during real-world flying.

The helicopter pilots of the Hungarian Defence Forces receive such training in the Mi-171 helicopter simulator of the HTP Ostrava CZ center, partly for handling in-flight emergencies and partly for executing tasks under operational conditions.

Officially, there is nothing at stake at the annual international competition in the center, yet the helicopter pilots under training try to prove that they are the most prepared ones among the crews of the nations flying a given type, in order to rank themselves at the top of the invisible “professional pyramid" of helicopter pilots.

For the sake of objectivity, the participants’ performance was assessed by computers during the competition, while multi-crew cooperation and the “calmness" shown in handling emergencies were scored separately. The competition included an instrument flying task, two different emergency scenarios and a skills test.
