On Thursday, May 26, fifteen guests from the general staff course at the National Defence Academy of the Republic of India – including high-ranking generals, civilian officeholders and a delegation of foreign students – paid a visit to the Defence and Law Enforcement Committee of the National Assembly. Fidesz–Hungarian Civic Union MP Zsolt Csampa, the deputy chairman of the committee received the delegation from the South Asian country.

With senior civilian officeholders and foreign students from Nepal, Saudi Arabia and France in their entourage, the one-star generals of the land forces, air force and navy of the Indian armed forces traveled from Uganda to Hungary, which is the second leg on their study tour. As part of their one-week program in our country, they were briefed on the activities of the Hungarian Parliament’s Defence and Law Enforcement Committee (DLEC).

Zsolt Csampa informed the guests that as a special committee, the DLEC is a body of the National Assembly responsible for putting forward initiatives and motions, forming opinions, making decisions and participating in the control of governmental activities related to national defence and law enforcement. As a result of last year’s parliamentary elections, the composition of the committee reflects the two-third majority of the governing parliamentary parties. The deputy chair of DLEC also briefed the students of the general staff course on Hungary’s military missions abroad, for instance the role of the Hungarian Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) in Afghanistan, and the importance of our country’s commitment in the Balkans.

The Ministry of Defence organized a professional program for the Indian guests on their one-week study tour in Hungary. Within the program, the members of the group visited the Ministry of Defence, where they were received by Lt-Gen. Zoltán Orosz, Deputy Chief of Defence. At a subsequent presentation, they were informed about the structure and tasks of the Hungarian Defence Forces. Their program included a visit to the HDF Pápa Air Base, where they learnt about the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) fleet of C–17 Globemaster military transport aircraft.

Let us add that bilateral military relations between Hungary and India are governed by an intergovernmental agreement that was signed a few years ago in New Delhi. The ongoing cooperation under the auspices of a joint military committee set up by the parties comprises the exchange of experiences between specialists in military technology and CBRN defence as well as offering training and education opportunities in Hungarian military institutions for the service personnel of the Indian armed forces.
