National Day Overseas
Szöveg: honvedelem.hu | 2015. november 16. 8:45The first two months of the autumn have special importance to some Central European countries, as many historic moments are linked to this period. 26 October is the Day of Independence and a New Constitution in Austria, 28 October is the Day of National Independence in the Czech Republic, 1 September is the Day of the Constitution of Slovakia, and 23 October is the anniversary of the 1956 Revolution in Hungary.
According to the tradition of earlier years, the soldiers of these four nations posted at the NATO ACT in Norfolk commemorated their important historical events on 28 October. The reception started with a speech delivered by the hosts of the evening. Col. István Juhász, Hungarian National Liaison Representative (NLR) emphasized the significance of the events of October 1956 and 1989, then, speaking on behalf of the whole Hungarian community, he concluded with thanking his audience for honouring the event with their presence. After the opening, there was a tasting of cakes baked by the soldiers’ wives.
The event was a good opportunity to present national values and cuisine, and allowed the participants an insight into a small segment of history. The conversations in small groups further developed the good relationship among the nations, which the soldiers serving in Norfolk can experience day after day while working in the system of NATO.
