The Secretary General met the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday (23 September 2013), exactly on the 5th anniversary of the UN-NATO declaration, which raised the cooperation between the two organisations to a new level. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen expressed satisfaction at five years of increasingly successful cooperation, including regular consultations between NATO and UN specialised bodies on issues such as crisis management, training, and the fight against terrorism. They discussed the crisis in Syria and NATO’s defensive deployment of Patriots to Turkey; the UN-mandated NATO missions Kosovo and Afghanistan; NATO’s preparations for a new mission to train, advise and assist Afghan security forces after 2014; and further scope for NATO-UN cooperation.

During his visit from 23 to 26 September, Mr. Fogh Rasmussen will also hold talks with several Heads of State and Government, as well as ministers of foreign affairs, and will attend the opening of the UN General Assembly’s ministerial session.
