New Commander in Mazar-e Sharif

Harald Gante handed over command of the Train Advise and Assist Command North (TAAC-N) – which is located in Mazar-e Sharif, Northern Afghanistan – to German Brig.-Gen. Andreas Hannemann during a ceremony held on February 19.
The change-of-command ceremony was attended by Gen. John Campbell, the US commander of the Resolute Support Mission (RSM), German Lt.-Gen. Carsten Jacobson, the deputy commander of the mission, Lt.-Gen. Hans Werner Fritz, the commander of the Bundeswehr Joint Command, several generals, ambassadors, consuls, Afghan Members of Parliament and the deputy governor of Balkh Province. High-ranking representatives of the Afghan National Army (ANA), the Afghan National Police (ANP), the Afghan Border Police (ABP), the UN and the NGOs active in the region also honored the event with their presence.
In their speeches delivered at the ceremony, the speakers talked about last year’s most important events, highlighted the tasks of the presidential election and government formation, and also referred to the challenges of this year. As of January 1, 2015 NATO forces are deployed in Afghanistan under a changed mandate in a training and advisory role to assist the work of the ANA and the Afghan police.
Hungary is participating in the Resolute Support Mission with around 100 troops, who are focusing their efforts mainly on the training of troops and policemen stationed in the northern part of the country.
Troops of 20 nations serve at the Train Advise and Assist Command North (TAAC-N), to which the Hungarian Defence Forces contribute the fifth largest contingent.
