The soldiers of the HDF Military Advisory Team (MAT) and the HDF National Support Element–Afghanistan deployed in the area of operations – together with soldiers serving in individual positions – conducted a live fire exercise (LFX) in Mazar-e Sharif on June 24.

It is 06:30 and the temperature is +38 degrees Celsius. Brilliant sunshine. The soldiers lined up for the briefing to receive the march order, and then the checking started. Headcount, weapons, equipment, communications. Everything is OK. A crackle in the radio – “Tens! This is Ten!" And the Hungarian convoy was on its way to the range.

The soldiers arriving at the range were received by a “friendly", +40-degrees Celsius temperature and dust blowing in the wind. Observation posts and targets are in their places. The range officer briefed the personnel on the task and the safety rules. Four firing sectors, various firing tasks to be executed with the weapons in use.

The command “To the firing line!", was followed by the bang, click and echo of turret machine guns, assault rifles and pistols. The points on the hillside of the range, as designated distant targets, produced clouds of dust indicating the impact of machine gun rounds. The LFX was made more eventful with the participation of US and German soldiers cooperating with the HDF Military Advisory Team and the National Support Element.

The sun was already past the zenith when the convoy started returning to the camp. During the trip, the helicopters of ISAF made a low-level flypast over the convoy to welcome the returning troops.

“The training objective was to make sure that the soldiers can use in practice what they have learned here successfully and efficiently while executing tasks in their positions", Col. István Juhász, the commander of the HDF Military Advisory Team told us.
