Russian–Hungarian Joint Commission of Archivists Holds Session in Budapest

The recent Budapest-held session of the Russian–Hungarian joint commission of archivists has opened up new possibilities in Hungary’s relations with Russia.

On the Hungarian side, Dr. Csaba Szabó, Director-General, National Archives of Hungary, Dr. Réka Kiss Földváryné, President, Hungarian Committee of National Remembrance and Col. Dr. Vilmos Kovács, Commandant, MoD Institute and Museum of Military History received the four-member Russian delegation headed by Andrei Viktorovich Iurasov, Deputy Chief, Federal Archival Agency of Russia (ROSARKHIV).

The meeting was organized on the basis of an agreement concluded between the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage and Russia’s federal archive service on 2 July 2003, which promotes joint cooperation in the field of archival affairs.

In the session, the members of the committee – the deputy chief of the Federal Archival Agency of Russia, the director of the Russian State Archive of the Economy, the deputy director of the Historico-Documentary Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, as well as the archivists of the National Archives of Hungary, the Hungarian Committee of National Remembrance and the MoD Institute and Museum of Military History – approved a new work schedule for 2017–2020, which includes plans to organize joint exhibitions and conferences and publish source publications. The committee continues to support the exchange of experience between Hungarian and Russian archivists, and cooperates in providing Russian and Hungarian researchers with access to archival documents as well as in publishing Russian and Hungarian written heritage (Russica and Hungarica) kept in archives. During the discussion, the possibility was raised of expanding the GULAG database.

In the session, the launch of a book entitled “Hungarian–Soviet Economic Relations, 1948–1973. Documents" took place at the Embassy of the Russian Federation.

As part of the three-day professional program, the delegation visited the National Archives of Hungary and its branch archives in Fejér County, as well as the MoD Institute and Museum of Military History, Parliament building and the Leitha monitor museum ship.
