The Joint Terminal Attack Control (JTAC) capability of the Hungarian Defence Forces is going to expand in the near future. Thanks to the equipment package which facilitates close air support (CAS), the force protection (FP) level will increase of the Hungarian contingent serving with ISAF in Afghanistan. In a few months, the Hungarian Defence Forces are going to receive the package that includes various laser, radio and GPS devices. The US Central Command (US CENTCOM) has recently approved the donation of military equipment to the Hungarian Ministry of Defence, and US Ambassador Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis informed Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende about the decision.

The pieces of military equipment provided by the US military are going to greatly increase the operational and force protection (FP) capabilities of the Hungarian contingents on their tours of duty in Afghanistan. With the help of the donated equipment, the joint terminal attack controllers (JTAC) on combat operations will be able to call in close air support (CAS) for the ground forces.

This means that Hungarian troops will be able to request CAS from the NATO warplanes (including US F-16 fighters) and helicopters on a given operation.

The Hungarian Defence Forces are to receive the items of military equipment in two phases. The first shipment is going to be delivered to the HDF contingents serving in Afghanistan in a short while. The military equipment package includes night vision goggles (NVG), mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles and armored ambulances.

During the second phase the Hungarian EOD troops will receive jammers for counter-improvised explosive devices (C-IED) activities, the combat medics the pieces of medical equipment and the Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) the military technology they need to deploy in the area of operations.
