With a final training in the Dóc range on April 1, the Afghan Election Security Platoon (AESP) has completed the preparations. The training began in February in Hódmezõvásárhely, at the HDF 5th ‘István Bocskai’ Infantry Brigade with 64 troops. This is the second time the brigade has hosted the training of the AESP.

The first platoon to participate in the safe organisation of elections in Afghanistan joined the 6th and 7th rotation of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) last year. This year they need the AESP again in Afghanistan, since there will be parliamentary elections. Lieutenant László Bálint, the future commander of the personnel to depart said in the first phase of the preparation they have mastered the general knowledge that is necessary to the mission.

In addition to firearms practices, there were other courses as well, the majority of which were held in classrooms by instructors who have served in the Asian country. This phase was followed by special preparations. Troops selected for infantry positions had to attend a medical training, others had command trainings and obtained a licence for BTR combat vehicles and MBG-270 Mercedes ATVs. Machine gunners and the command staff have also attended special trainings. The last phase of the training was the preparation of formations, including VIP and convoy escort and rapid response to incidents.

At the last training on Thursday the personnel conducted special task force fire trainings number 3 and 5. During the former, the convoy has to stop due to a technical problem with one of the vehicles. The drivers repair it but the convoy is attacked. Besides defeating the attackers, the troops have to pay attention not to hurt civilians. Fire training number 5 is for the practice of VIP escort and rescue with opening fire and laying a smoke screen in the event of an attack. The AESP has shown an excellent performance. The judges who were monitoring the exercises are experienced non-commissioned officers who have returned with the PRT-7 in March, so they could transfer their most up-to-date knowledge to the departing personnel.

In May the platoon will participate in training exercise Clever Ferret 2010, the largest training event of the Hungarian Defence Forces this year, where training and team building will continue.
