ZMNE: Two Hundred Years And A Double Farewell

Szöveg: Gábor Kálmánfi |  2008. augusztus 7. 6:41

The community of Zrínyi Miklós University of National Defence (ZMNE) said farewell to both its 459 graduates and its Ülloi Street campus during the leaving celebration on 18th July, since the next semester will start for every faculty at the Hungária Boulevard base. This year’s end-of-year ceremony is special, because Hungarian military higher education celebrates its 200th birthday in 2008.

The graduates shook hands with the rector and the deans wearing, according to their legal status, uniform or – for the first time this year – a robe. In his ceremonial speech Dr. Imre Szekeres, Minister of Defence congratulated the graduates, and recalled the institute’s two hundred years of existence. Praising the academic work performed here, he highlighted: those establishing the former Ludovika academy exactly knew that the national training of officers is the foremost condition of the sovereignty of the state, and ZMNE dedicates itself to this goal even today. He emphasized that the Ministry of Defence supports the high level academic activities of the university. The reconstruction of the institute will finish in September, he added. The rector, Professor Dr. János Szabó said in his speech, that the average of the final exam of the university-level education is 4.14, which is barely less than last year’s average of 4.17.

During the academic year of 2007/2008 eight students graduated from the higher education level manager course, among them Colonel (Eng.) Lóránt Labádi, who was chosen by his companions ‘primus inter pares’, the first among equals. In the old type university-level basic training and supplementary training 62 students (42 army officers, 11 policemen, 9 civil students) graduated from Kossuth Lajos Faculty of Military Sciences and 99 students (13 army officers and 86 civilians) from the Bolyai János Faculty of Military Technical Sciences. 51 civilian students participated in the new type of master program. In the college (old type) training 54 students (27 army officers and 27 policemen) finished their studies at the Faculty of Military Sciences , and 33 army officers graduated from the Faculty of Technical Sciences.

In the new type of higher education basic training (BSc) 23 policemen and 29 civilian students took their diploma from the Faculty of Military Science and 118 civilian students from the Faculty of Technical Sciences. There are altogether 114 ladies among the graduates. 191 students continued their studies successfully in the doctoral programs of the University, 52 took their diploma with a good result and received a doctoral (PhD) degree. Police Lieutenant General József Bencze, Police High Commissioner emphasized that merging police and border contol is part of a ‘logical’ process. The freshly graduated border guards will do a responsible job at the borders of the European Union, he added.
