The English-language film “Hungarian Peacekeepers in Bosnia”, a production of Zrínyi Média is now available on our website. The film starts with an outline of the present-day history of Bosnia-Herzegovina and continues to provide an insight into the life and tasks of the Hungarian EUFOR contingent that deploys with the European Union’s peacekeeping force (EUFOR) in an operation aimed at maintaining a safe and secure environment in the country.

The bloodiest war in Europe after World War II broke out during the 1990s in the Balkans, where member states of the former Republic of Yugoslavia were fighting for their independence. From 1995 to 2004, NATO deployed its forces in Bosnia-Herzegovina to supervise compliance with the terms of the Dayton Peace Agreement that put an end to the conflict. On 2 December 2004, nine years after the war ended, he European Union took control of the peacekeeping mission and launched Operation EUFOR ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the third and largest military operation that the EU has embarked upon to date.

Hungarian troops have been participating in the multinational mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina since 1995. The Hungarian Engineer Contingent that first deployed to the war-torn country played a key role in the reconstruction efforts. Our troops have been serving under EUFOR command since 2004. The primary task of the Hungarian contingent is to conduct peacekeeping operations as part of a multinational battalion, while its secondary task is to provide a tactical reserve for KFOR. A recent addition to their task system is the mentoring role in training the armed forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
