National Day in UNFICYP

Dr. Tímea Samu | 2012. augusztus 24. 9:56On August 14 the Hungarian contingent of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) celebrated August 20 with a staff meeting and an official reception. Appropriately enough, the contingent held the day of King Saint Stephen, the founder of the Hungarian state in Camp St. Istvan, Athienou, which was dressed in red, white and green in honor of the significant event.
In what followed, the commander of the Hungarian contingent held a reception with the participation of the senior leaders of UNFICYP, including Chief of Mission Lisa M. Buttenheim and Force Commander Maj-Gen. Chao Liu. In addition to the UNFICYP leadership, the staff of the Embassy of Hungary in Cyprus and the ambassadors of countries serving in Sector 4 – Anna Turenicova (Slovakia) and Savo Drujica (Serbia) – also accepted the invitation from the Hungarian contingent and honored the event with their presence.
After the national anthem was played, Lt.-Col. Péter Lukács delivered a welcome speech in which he described the background to the national day of August 20, the circumstances of the foundation of the Hungarian state, St. Stephen’s Admonitions – which has a message for our times –, and greeted the guests and the military personnel attending the event. The national day enabled the soldiers of nations serving together with the personnel of the Hungarian contingent to learn about the historic significance of one of the Hungarian people’s noblest national days. The guests invited to the reception had opportunity to try the special Hungarian cuisine too.
