Returning Home from Mission – Going on Mission

On August 31 a combined “Welcome Home” and farewell ceremony was held in the banquet hall of the HDF Joint Force Command (HDF JFC). Lt.-Gen. József Kovács, the Commander of the HDF JFC handed over tokens of appreciation and medals to the troops returning home from missions and wished the departing ones soldiers’ luck.

New Reception Building at the National Historical Memorial Site of Mohács

On the occasion of the 485th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács – on Sunday, August 28 – the new reception building of the National Historical Memorial Site of Mohács was inaugurated with all due solemnities in Sátorhely, where Dr. Gábor Szarka, the Head of the MoD Cabinet Office was also present, and laid wreaths.

Centenary of the First Flight Across Lake Balaton

A hundred years ago, Lieutenant Antal Lányi was the first pilot to fly across the Hungarian sea between Badacsony and Fonyódliget, and the flight took him eight minutes. To commemorate the pioneer venture in the history of aviation, on Saturday, August 13, a ceremony was held at the Fonyód port. At the memorial unveiled ten years ago, wreaths were laid by MoD Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. István Simicskó, and Ilona Harris, Antal Lányi’s granddaughter, who arrived from Australia to pay tribute to the heroic achievement of her grandfather.

Iseum has opened its gates in Szombathely

“The Iseum is a very valuable asset, and we, the citizens of Szombathely are its keepers and depositaries. This piece is our heritage of the common European past; it is not only our property but our task and mission as well”  said Minister of Defence Dr. Csaba Hende on Friday, August 12 at the opening ceremony of the Iseum Savariense Archaeological Workshop and Storehouse of Szombathely. In the Roman period, the Szombathely shrine was the centre of the cult of Isis in the Danube-region.

Returning from Mission – Going on Mission

A joint welcome home and farewell ceremony was held on July 7 at the HDF Joint Force Command (HDF JFC) to welcome the second rotation (35 personnel) of the HDF ISAF National Support Element, the second rotation (18 personnel) of the Hungarian Logistic Mentor Team of the HDF ISAF Combat Service Support (CSS) School, and 25 soldiers who served in individual positions during the past six months in ISAF, Afghanistan. At the same time, the occasion was a farewell ceremony for four officers who are to leave for their tour of duty abroad.

The Polish and the Hungarian Are Two Good Friends

“Relations between the Polish and the Hungarian people are unique in Europe, deep-rooted. These two nations never took up arms against each other”  – said MoD Administrative State Secretary Lajos Fodor on June 30 in Balatonlelle. Hungary handed over the presidency of the European Union to Poland on this very day, therefore the first day of the four-day Hungarian World Meeting – which was held in the town at Lake Balaton – was dedicated to the celebration of Polish-Hungarian friendship.

“We Belong Together with the Victims”

“In the dark period of Hungarian history, the state and a part of the nation “had been weighed in the balances and found wanting”. We belong together with the victims and by remembering them we declare that we belong together in the present as well”  pointed out MoD Cabinet Chief Dr. Gábor Szarka on July 3 at the commemoration of the Holocaust held by the Jewish Community of Szombathely on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the deportations.

Air Base Receives Streamer

President of the Republic Dr. Pál Schmitt awarded a streamer to the HDF Pápa Air Base on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of its  existence. The streamer was tied with all due solemnities to the unit colours by Lt. Gen. Zoltán Orosz, Deputy Chief of the MoD Defence Staff on Friday, July 1. The notable anniversary was commemorated with a family day containing appealing programs.

Operating Room from Nothing – In Live Coverage

On June 6, Monday the professional day of the multinational military medical display “Vigorous Warrior 2011” was arranged on the zero point range. In addition to the nominated forces of the HDF Medical Service and several cooperating HDF units, Czech, French, Dutch and German subject matter experts (SME) in military medicine demonstrated their professional skills as well as the use of their equipment and – partly novel – techniques. Unlike in the case of the large-scale maneuvers of previous years, the correspondents of Zrínyi Média covered each phase of the capability demonstration live.

Largest Exercise of the Year Begins

Dynamic Cooperation 2011, the largest field training exercise of the Hungarian Defence Forces this year began on Monday, May 23 with an opening ceremony and a press conference. The multinational medical capability demonstration Vigorous Warrior 2011 is going to take place within Dynamic Cooperation 2011. At the opening ceremony the troops observed a moment of silence, standing at attention to pay tribute to their comrades who were killed last week in the line of duty in Afghanistan.
