“Relations between the Polish and the Hungarian people are unique in Europe, deep-rooted. These two nations never took up arms against each other”  – said MoD Administrative State Secretary Lajos Fodor on June 30 in Balatonlelle. Hungary handed over the presidency of the European Union to Poland on this very day, therefore the first day of the four-day Hungarian World Meeting – which was held in the town at Lake Balaton – was dedicated to the celebration of Polish-Hungarian friendship.

In his festive opening address the State Secretary recalled the most important historical events that serve as a connection between the two nations, and praised their steadfast and deep friendship.

“The Polish grammar school that operated in Balatonboglár ranked among the best in Europe, and the students cherish this tradition up to the present day" - said Lajos Fodor.

Roman Kowalski, Poland’s Ambassador to Hungary stressed in his speech that “The southern bank of Lake Balaton is Hungary’s Little Poland," referring to the fact that Balatonboglár, located next to Lelle, took in many Polish refugees during the Second World War.

Following the symbolic handover of the EU flag, Lajos Fodor opened photographer Krisztina Kertész-Bakos’ exhibition entitled “Glorious Spring Campaign" (Dicsőséges Tavaszi Hadjárat). As the State Secretary pointed out, it seemed “as if the photos had been taken in the 19th century and we could still hear the rattle of swords and the sound of the horses’ hooves."

The end of the Polish-Hungarian friendship day was marked by the wreath-laying ceremony of a delegation from the Miklós Zrínyi National Defence University (MZNDU) - including the patron of the event, Col. (Eng.) Dr. Sándor Felházi, Dean, MZNDU Faculty of Military Science – at a memorial plaque on the House of Polish-Hungarian Friendship in Balatonboglár.

The wreath-laying ceremony was followed by a conference on Hungarian-Polish relations.
