Tenth Rotation Is Ready to Leave

The 10th troop rotation of the HDF EUFOR contingent is scheduled to deploy to the area of operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina in several phases in mid-January. We interviewed Lt.-Col. Tamás Papp, the commander of the contingent – which is mainly drawn from the HDF units of Győr and Szentes – about the peacekeepers’ training and tasks.

New Capabilities in the HDF

“As of January 1, 2012 the development of the volunteer reserve system enters a new phase. From that point on, the admission procedure begins for the personnel to be trained for non-security-related duties”, Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende said about the volunteer reserve system at a press conference held on December 30 in the Parliament building.

Combat Life Saving (CLS) – On a Higher Level

Combat Life Saver – this is the English name of the medical training program, which is arranged at the Medical Preparation and Further Training Base of the HDF Military Hospital several times a year. More than 300 soldiers have participated in the two-week preparation course of seventy-hour duration this year.

HDF EUFOR Contingent: Beyond the First Half

Dr. István Simicskó’s Visit to Canada

MoD Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. István Simicskó drew attention to the importance of commemoration and talked about the lessons and message of the 1956 Revolution in his speech delivered at the City Hall of Toronto on October 23. The State Secretary paid a visit to the North American country between October 21 and 25 at the invitation of the Canadian Hungarian Cultural Council.

Last Gunnery for „Csőrike”

The airmen of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base conducted a live gunnery for the second time this year on the zero point range near Veszprém. Several attack and transport helicopters took off from the airfield set up at the Újmajor section of the military training area to strike the targets placed in a distance of a few kilometers in the impact area. Held in the last week of September, this air gunnery was the last exercise for the popular, painted Mi-24 attack helicopter dubbed “Csőrike” (Beaky) with tail number 716.

CBRN Defence Training in Slovakia

The personnel of the HDF 93rd ‘Petőfi Sándor’ CBRN Defence Battalion recently went on an exercise in Zemianske Kostol’any, Slovakia. Over the past years, the small Slovak village with a population of around 2,000 hosted the Hungarian CBRN defence troops on a regular basis, as the CBRN Training and Testing Centre (CBRN TTC) of the armed forces of Slovakia is stationed in a military installation outside the village limits. This military base is unique in that its area – under very strictly controlled circumstances – makes it possible to conduct training programs involving the use of live chemical warfare agents (CWAs).

Dragon Fire and Hail of Arrows on the Range

Last week the Hungarian Defence Forces ‘zero point’ range and the Kőröshegy shooting range above Öskü resounded with the thunder of infantry weapons, ATGWs and mortars. These were the points where the personnel of the anti-tank units of the Hungarian Defence Forces and a rifle company of the HDF 25th ‘Klapka György’ Infantry Brigade, augmented with mortar and ATGW sections, executed their live fire exercise tasks in line with the training scheme.

The Hungarian Warship Crews Shoot in Serbia

For the first time in decades the Hungarian warship crew members have executed live fire exercises (LFXs) from the water. Brig. Gen. János Huszár, the Chief of Land Force of the HDF Joint Forces Command (HDF JFC) and Col. Eng. Gábor Hajdu, the Commander of the HDF 1st “Honvéd” EOD and Warship Regiment visited the VIP-day on Wednesday, September 14 of the Exercise “Iron Cat 2011”staged between 5th and 15th of September on the Titel water shooting range in Serbia.
