Patrol Championship – This Time for Two Days

It has been two years now that the Hungarian Defence Forces-level patrol championship is organized separately for women and men. In June the women had opportunity to go on a trial of strength and skills on the shooting range of Püspökszilágy. Unlike in previous years, the men’s competition lasted for two days and was arranged in Tata on 7-8 September.

Warship Crews Prepare for Live Fire Exercise

A joint Serbian–Hungarian air defence live fire exercise (LFX) will be held under the name ‘Iron Cat 2011’ in Serbia between September 5th and 15th on the Titel water shooting range. The warship crews of the HDF 1st Honvéd EOD and Warship Regiment are already training for the exercise in the Újpest military port and on the Danube.

Military Meteorologists were Celebrating

For decades, the day of military meteorology has been celebrated in the Hungarian Defence Forces on the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Alfréd Hille. On the military service day, a festive personnel meeting was held on Friday, August 12 in the HDF Geoinformation Service (HDF GEOS) on Szilágyi Erzsébet Avenue.

Transfer of Authority (TOA) Beginning in Priština

The first group of the fifth rotation of the HDF KFOR Contingent in the past week arrived to Camp ’Slim Lines’, in Priština, Kosovo. The group led by Contingent Commander Lt. Col. Tajti Miklós, began the handover and takeover of duties the very next day.

On Wednesday, August 3, the troops of the 8th rotation of the HDF European Union Force Contingent (EUFOR-8 HUNCON) coming home from BosniaHerzegovina, and the soldiers, who completed their service in the European Union Training Mission – Somalia (EUTM-Somalia) were greeted in the presence of their family members and relatives in Tata.

“Warrant Officer, I’ve Found a Shell!”

Once it was the artillery range of Hungarian and Soviet military units stationed in Somogy county – today it is a land managed by the HM Kaszó Erdőgazdaság Zrt. (MoD ‘Kaszó’ Forestry Ltd.). Similarly to every other artillery range, millions of small and large pieces of shrapnel are scattered around here, together with broken half-shells and even a few intact ones. The latter would pose serious danger to workers if they started logging in the area.

Medal Parade in Pristina

The traditional medal parade for Hungarian and Portuguese peacekeepers serving in Camp Slim Lines, Pristina, Kosovo was held on Monday, July 25. Maj.-Gen. József Kovács, Commander, HDF Joint Force Command (HDF JFC) also attended the ceremony, which was organized for the troops who are going to complete their tour of duty abroad in these days.

Memorial Session in the National Museum

555 years ago, on July 22, 1456 Christian troops led by John Hunyadi and John of Capistrano crushed the Ottoman army that had been besieging Nándorfehérvár for three weeks by that time. On the occasion of the illustrious anniversary the National Memorial Site and Funerary Committee and the Hungarian National Museum staged a joint memorial session on Friday, July 22 in the banquet hall of the Museum.

Preparing for the Transfer of Authority

With their six-month tour of duty nearing completion, the fourth rotation of the HDF KFOR contingent (KFOR-4 HUNCON) started making preparations for the transfer of authority (TOA) process. The Hungarian peacekeepers currently serving in Camp Slim Lines, Pristina, Kosovo will be replaced by the incoming contingent which is to arrive in the area of operations in August in three phases.

Just a Few Days Left…

The six-month tour of duty of the HDF EUFOR-8 contingent in Bosnia-Herzegovina is nearing completion. The first group of the next rotation has already arrived in Camp Butmir, Sarajevo. Of course, the outgoing troops have been working hard during their last days of service. Besides executing their tasks, however, they had time to relax, do sports and play music as well…
