555 years ago, on July 22, 1456 Christian troops led by John Hunyadi and John of Capistrano crushed the Ottoman army that had been besieging Nándorfehérvár for three weeks by that time. On the occasion of the illustrious anniversary the National Memorial Site and Funerary Committee and the Hungarian National Museum staged a joint memorial session on Friday, July 22 in the banquet hall of the Museum.

After the glorious victory gained five hundred and fifty-five years ago, Europe could breathe a sigh of relief: the key to the medieval Kingdom of Hungary had not been seized by the Turks.

What is more, the victory over the Ottomans was introduced as one of the most glorious chapters in Hungarian history. The noon bell takes us back to the Nándorfehérvár victory every day.

As from 2011, the anniversary of the Nándorfehérvár victory is a national memorial day, the proposition was passed in the National Assembly on July 4.

The Professors’ Batthyány Circle, MP Sándor Lezsák, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, MoD Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. István Simicskó, as well as many other Members of Parliament joined the initiative. The National Memorial Site and Funerary Committee were also among the first organizations to support it.

Following that, several guests – among them István Gedai, the deputy chairman of the National Memorial Site and Funerary Committee – recalled the historical events.

In his speech the moderator of the event, Gergely Kovács a member of the Hungarian National Museum quoted from the book entitled ’The Noon Bell in Hungary and the World’, which has recently been published by Zrínyi Media. The author of the volume, Zsolt Visy was the last speaker, and the strains of the noon bell closed the event.
