Of the 23 participating nations, Hungary contributes the third largest contingent in Camp Butmir, Sarajevo. In addition to the details of the Hungarian engagement, the Hungarian journalists who arrived at the base of the EUFOR mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina had opportunity to learn about the capital of the country, Sarajevo as well. After the Austrian and Turkish contingents, the Hungarian one is the third largest one in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Currently around 160 Hungarians – an infantry company, a national support element, the NCOs and officers serving on the staff and an EOD team – are serving at Camp Butmir, the base of the EUFOR mission next to Sarajevo Airport.

On Tuesday, September 10 Maj.-Gen. Dieter Heidecker, the Austrian commander of the mission told the Hungarian journalists staying in the camp that the Hungarians are special not only because of their professional training standards but also because their geographical proximity and historical similarities enable them to have a deeper insight into the local people’s life.

Like Maj.-Gen. Heidecker, US Brig.-Gen. Merle D. Hart, the commander of NATO HQ Sarajevo also praised the Hungarian soldiers’ performance. As he said, Bosnia-Herzegovina is a really safe country, thanks in large part to the Hungarian engagement among others.

During the day the journalists’ group visited the Hungarian embassy in Bosnia-Herzegovina, where Ambassador József Pandur pointed out that the military presence is very important in the development of the country. The local people consider the Hungarians as their honorary neighbours, and apart from the EUFOR mission, the two nations are linked by many diplomatic ties as well.
