The Czech–Hungarian joint river crossing training exercise “Duna-2012” has ended successfully. The exercise took place between September 10 and 13 on the two banks of River Tisza at Szentes, and the soldiers of the two nations showed their excellent cooperative skills during the task execution.

Since 2010, this has been the second occasion for the personnel of the HDF 37th “Ferenc Rákóczi II" Engineer Regiment and the 15th Engineer Brigade of the Czech land forces to jointly execute riverine bridge and ferry site construction tasks. Two years ago the Czech Republic received the Hungarians, while this year the Hungarian army engineers hosted their Czech comrades.

The operations are not new to either of the partners. The Czech soldiers are familiar with most of the military equipment used by the Hungarians, so the army engineers of both nations were operating the equipment professionally. The different languages did not cause any problems because all participants used military English to speak with their comrades and help their work.

Lt.-Col. (Eng.) Sándor Kaszanyi, the acting chief of staff of the Szentes engineer regiment and Col. Ota Rolence, the commander of the Czech brigade both agreed that the Czech and the Hungarian personnel were equally well-trained, all learnt a lot of from the differences in practice and application, and both said they were sure that if their soldiers were to cooperate in real-world situations they would also do an excellent and quick job together.

At the culmination exercise (CULEX), the soldiers demonstrated the steps of constructing and testing a bridge on the river flawlessly without any accidents. The end of the training was crowned with their exemplary cooperation during the CULEX.
