On Tuesday, 21 June the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Budapest Iain Lindsay paid a visit to the Hungarian Defence Forces Pápa Air Base, where he was introduced to the training of airmen of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) in Hungary.

For the personnel serving at the air base, a C–17 transport aircraft landing on the tarmac is a usual sight. On Tuesday, 21 June, however, the aircraft approaching the base to land was not one of those that are familiar in Pápa, but rather a C–17 of the Royal Air Force (RAF), which arrived for a three-day exercise in Pápa. While in Hungary, between 20–23 June the pilots were brushing up their tactical night landing skills. The HDF Pápa Air Base provides an almost unique opportunity in Europe for this practice, as apart from Pápa, it is only in Great Britain where pilots can practice these of maneuvers using night vision goggles (NVG).

After being introduced to the capabilities of the air base – in the company of Péter Siklósi, Deputy State Secretary for Defence Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Defence and Base Commander Col. László Gangler – Ambassador Iain Lindsay took a closer look at the C–17 participating in the training. His program also included a training flight, during which the JAS 39 Gripen fighters of the HDF 59th “Szentgyörgyi Dezső" Air Base carried out a practice intercept.

He told us that it was great to see the training, and that the C–17 is a wonderful aircraft. The British ambassador said he hoped that the aircraft of the Royal Air Force would often come back to Hungary to conduct further exercises, adding that the relations in the field of defence between the United Kingdom and Hungary are excellent, and as an ambassador, his goal is to encourage more defence cooperation between the two countries.
