Before Christmas Dr. Pál Schmitt and Dr. Csaba Hende participated in a two-day unofficial visit in the Western Balkans. The Head of State and the Minister of Defence travelled to Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday, December 21, and to Kosovo on Thursday, December 22, with an aim to meet the Hungarian soldiers serving in the theatre of operations and with the commanders of the international missions.

The delegation – the member of which was among others Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the MoD Defence Staff -, conducted negotiations with Maj. Gen. Robert Brieger, the Commander of EUFOR (COM EUFOR), and with his Hungarian Deputy (DCOM), Brig. Gen. Zoltán Gulyás in Sarajevo, on the EUFOR Headquarters (EUFOR HQ). In what followed the President of the Republic and the Minister of Defence inspected the container-camp of the Hungarian troops serving in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

On the second day of his visit Dr. Pál Schmitt paid a courtesy call at the President of Kosovo, H.E. Atifete Jahjaga, while Minister of Defence Dr. Csaba Hende and Gen. Tibor Benkő took part in a working lunch with Mr. Agim Çeku, Minister for the Kosovo Security Force.

Following the talks delivered with Kosovo Force Deputy Commander (D COM KFOR) Johann Luif, the President of the Republic and his attendants watched a spectacular simulation exercise in the Camp giving home also to the Hungarian soldiers.

In the person of Pál Schmitt it was the first head of state visit to the Hungarian troops serving in the youngest state of Europe.
