Air Base Firefighters in a Live Situation

On December 28, 2011 in the evening hours, the fire service of the HDF Pápa Air Base was placed on alert. A family house caught fire at Béb, a settlement near the town of Pápa. Upon receiving the special grade 4 alert, fire brigades from the whole area of Veszprém County arrived on the scene.

The firefighters of the Pápa Air Base were called out by the municipal fire chief of Pápa. Having requested the relevant authorizations, the duty supervisor of the Base Operations Center alerted the firefighting unit on duty, which arrived at the scene in a short time, in just 13 minutes.

Working under Fireman Maj. István Csillag, the chief of the firefighting operation, the military fire crew started to remedy the damages. At that point, the whole house was already in flames together with its annexes and the vehicles and lumber heaped up in the yard. The fire spread to the timber storage facilities in the yard of the neighbor’s house.

Because there was insufficient water pressure in the fire hydrant network of the settlement, the firefighters of the Air Base supplied the amount of water needed to extinguish the flames in several turns from the neighboring settlements. Afterwards they used a jet of water to put out the blazes on a shed that caught fire again.

The extinguishing of this especially dangerous fire and the effective cooperation with the firefighters of the local government attest to the aptitude and high professional standards of the firefighters of the HDF Pápa Air Base, and also demonstrate their very good relationship with the municipal fire brigade.

Three firefighters of the HDF Pápa Air Base participated with one vehicle in the extinguishing process, namely SFC András Mecseki (duty supervisor), L/Sgt. Gábor Szocsevka (operator) and L/Sgt. Jenő Gál (driver).
