British Chief of Defence Visits Hungary

On Thursday, 13 July, Minister of Defence Dr. István Simicskó received, on an office call, British Chief of Defence Gen. Sir Stuart Peach and the delegation headed by him in Budapest. The British chief of defence arrived in Hungary at the invitation of Chief of Defence Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő.

At the meeting, Minister of Defence Dr. István Simicskó stated that the defence cooperation between Hungary and the United Kingdom and the traditionally good relations between the two armed forces have significantly strengthened over the last few years. The soldiers of the two nations participate in many joint activities and exercises, so there are increasingly more opportunities for exchanging experience. The minister of defence added that currently British and Hungarian troops are taking part in Exercise Brave Warrior 2017 in Hungary, which is running with the participation of eight NATO member countries and offers the allied military forces an excellent opportunity to further develop interoperability.

Gen. Sir Stuart Peach welcomed the launch of the Zrínyi 2026 national defence and armed forces development program, and the concepts about the development of the Hungarian Defence Forces. At the meeting, the British chief of defence revealed that his country intends to widen the scope of military cooperation, as a first step of which he offered the possibility of collaboration between Special Operations Forces, and the sharing of experience related to the British reserve system and cadet training.

During the discussion, Dr. István Simicskó emphasized that NATO’s role has significantly increased due to new challenges to security, and in this new situation, we continue to give importance, priority, and support to the role of the United Kingdom in guaranteeing security and defence in Europe.

The British chief of defence also informed the Hungarian side about his intention to submit an application to become the chairman of the NATO Military Committee, which is currently chaired by Czech General Petr Pavel until 2018.
