Croatian Independence Celebrated in Cyprus

The Croatian soldiers serving in Sector Four of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) commemorated the 21st anniversary of Croatia’s independence at a ceremony held in Camp General Stefanik, Famagusta on June 25. The “Street of the Republic of Croatia” was inaugurated during the event.

The Parliament of Croatia declared the independence of the country on June 25, 1991. Lt.-Col. Vesna Tortic, the commander of the Croatian contingent delivered a speech in which he told the participant about the events leading up to Croatia’s independence and the role of the Croatian armed forces in international peacekeeping operations.

Croatian troops have been participating in the work of UNFICYP Sector Four as part of the Slovak contingent since September 2004, and Croatian policemen have been on duty in the UN Police since April 2005.

On the occasion of the national holiday, the ambassador of Croatia and Lt.-Col. Vesna Tortic inaugurated the “Street of the Republic of Croatia", then invited the guests to a traditional gala supper, in which spring onion and tomatoes were served with roast lamb as well as Croatian cake specialties.
