Doing Sports in Sarajevo

With the start of spring, many take great decisions and vows, and take up various sports activities. Camp Butmir in Sarajevo offers excellent opportunities to do indoor and outdoor sports.

For the Hungarian peacekeepers serving in Sarajevo, the option to lead a healthy lifestyle is provided by the camp-organized sports events and one hour a day for doing sports. In March, individuals and doubles teams formed of the nations serving in the camp were competing at a badminton championship. The teams with Hungarian members gave a decent performance in the individual and men’s doubles categories, and finished as gold, silver and bronze medalists in the mixed doubles category. Capt. Hajnalka Sipos and her teammate, Lubomir Mandinec (Slovakia) were placed first. The runner-up team was composed of WO Erika Németh and Lt.-Col. Csaba Somlai, while Patricia Wakefield (US) and Lt.-Col. Csaba Boros came in third to receive the well-deserved medals.

The soccer championship, another sport that is popular with the Hungarians, has started too, for the time being with friendly matches. Playing with the Romanian, Austrian and Turkish teams, the Hungarian team has so far mixed results as it has won two matches and lost another one.

Those who are not into team sports have opportunity to do workout in the gym for an hour three times a week, individually or in groups, being supervised by coaches. Those who do not wish to spend their time for sports indoors can build up stamina outdoors, by running on designated routes.
