First Phase of Training Nears Completion in Uganda

The first phase of training conducted by the European Union Training Mission for Somalia (EUTM–Somalia) is nearing completion. This basic training is a seven-week period during which Somali troops acquire the core military skills. This is the period of selection, because it will decide who can move on to the Junior Officer Training or the Train the Trainer module, and who will be posted as platoon commander NCO or squad leader.

The selection process consists of three steps. The first step is the weekly assessment, as every weekend the Somalis take an exam in what they have learned during the previous week. The next aspect of selection is the trainers’ personal opinion. The members of the training teams are continuously monitoring the soldiers’ progress and assessing them. The third aspect is a three-day culmination exercise in which they assess the trainees’ knowledge and have them conduct a live fire exercise too.

During the first phase the soldiers acquire important core skills. They learn how to use the weapons in service with the Somali Armed Forces, are trained in navigation, radio communication, and battlefield first aid, and acquire core tactical skills as well as discipline and standards of conduct. Most young trainees arrive in Uganda without military experience, and often without any qualifications. According to the Hungarian instructors, their development is plain to see.

In addition to the training, the Hungarian soldiers celebrated August 20, Hungary’s national day. At a ceremony held in a special atmosphere, 2LT Péter Csatlós, the leader of the Hungarian–German training team was promoted to first-lieutenant by Lt.-Col. Denis Bretaudeau, Commander Bihanga Training Camp and Maj. Dr. Tibor Steiner, Hungarian Senior National Representative.

The second phase of the training is about to begin, during which the Somali troops will perfect and sharpen the previously acquired core skills.
