Karl A. Lamers Appreciates Hungary’s Efforts

On Thursday, November 3 Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende and Dr. Karl A. Lamers, the president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly held discussions on current issues in the Manfred Wörner room of the Ministry of Defence.

Karl A. Lamers visited the Ministry of Defence on the day of the NATO conference organized in Budapest. The participants of the meeting included MoD Deputy State Secretary for Defence Policy and Planning Péter Siklósi and Head of the MoD Defence Policy Department Tas Kelemen.

Csaba Hende and Karl A. Lamers mostly discussed current political issues concerning Hungary and NATO. The two agreed that countering the potential effects of the global economic crisis in the field of military capabilities is a fundamental interest.

They pointed out that increasing effective political cooperation in practical terms between the European Union and NATO is a priority. Speaking about Afghanistan, the Defence Minister said that Hungary stays committed to supporting the NATO-led ISAF operation in Afghanistan.

Dr. Csaba Hende informed his partner that Hungary has been requested to assume the lead nation role again at the Kabul International Airport (KAIA) in 2012.

Karl A. Lamers appreciated the efforts made by the Hungarian government and the defence portfolio to reduce the effects of the crisis.
