Pavel, who has held the position since June 26, made the trip to meet with General Philip M. Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander of U.S. European Command.

“General Breedlove is, along with General Paloméros, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, one of my closest military partners as Commander of Allied Command Operations so, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to visit him at SHAPE and to thank the military staff for their continued hard work and dedication" said Pavel.

During the visit, leaders discussed the strategic role of NATO and its current and future operational importance.

“Since the NATO Summit in Wales last year and the approval of the Readiness Action Plan, General Breedlove and his staff have once again played a pivotal role in translating political and military direction and providing guidance. SHAPE has enabled the Military Committee and myself to provide clear consensus-based advice on operational matters to the North Atlantic Council" said Pavel.

“SHAPE and its Commanders have successfully managed several operations and missions in the face of complex and uncertain environments over the past decade. The Military Committee and I trust that they will continue to do so," he added.

General Pavel is the head of NATO’s senior military decision-making authority, which includes the two strategic commanders -Supreme Allied Commander Operations (SACEUR) and Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT).
